These are some of the easiest thoughts to recognize, but often we don’t acknowledge the negative implications of them.
Stress and anxiety come when we fear a potential future state, which seems out of our control.
This shows a lack of trust in our natural well-being, and – if left alone – will often spiral into more severe issues, including burnout.
Doubt is one of the trickiest negative thoughts to spot, because it is often disguised as thoughts that seem practical or realistic.
But, often, we assign these labels as excuses that stop us from going after what we really want.
Meanwhile, our doubt is pointing to deep-seated victim and scarcity beliefs.
Most of the time, we are completely unaware of the role these beliefs play in keeping us down.
Self-criticism includes things like: beating yourself up, frustration, or thinking you aren’t enough.
This criticism often runs in the background of our minds, a constant, silent narrative that stops us from believing in ourselves and our true abilities.
If we leave this criticism unchecked, it can spiral into more serious depression or anger.
When we point our negativity outside ourselves, we begin to criticize little things in the world around us.
This manifests as complaints, judgments, and expectations of what we think “should” or “must” be.
These external complaints represent our inability to accept what already is, and are a way of shirking our responsibility to find joy, peace, and well-being within ourselves.

We all have a constant inner narrative, and sometimes that narrative stops us from focusing on what we want to be doing in that moment.
Sometimes, we feel scattered and unfocused, while other times we hone-in on a single idea, and repeat it over and over to ourselves.
This hyperactivity is not always obvious or manic, but it can build gradually over time.
Most of the time, we don’t realize our thoughts are bad…until it’s too late.

The problem with those “unimportant” negative thoughts is that we often don’t notice them until it’s too late.
This could lead to a major crash, like burning out, or falling into a deep depression, but, most of the time, the result is a small, but constant drag on our energy.
- We don’t sleep as well.
- We eat and drink too much.
- We don’t exercise the way we should.
All of these create a spiral of negativity that builds up over time.
But the good news is: you have the ability to take back control.
The biggest fights are always those we have against ourselves.
Nothing kills your time, your productivity, and your mood worse than a constant inner battle.

For a back-of-the-napkin idea of what this is worth, take your annual salary and multiply it by 10.
That’s how much you could be leaving on the table during the course of your career.
