The Law of Giving and Receiving is the second law presented in Deepak Chopra’s book, The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success.
This idea exists across different cultures, and is also in other important religious texts, including The Bible.
In Chopra’s book, an understanding of this law must follow the first principle: The Law of Pure Potentiality.
In this post I’ll explain what the law means, and offer three steps for applying it to your life.
What Is The Law of Giving and Receiving?
The Law of Giving and Receiving is a law that describes the constant flow and exchange as universal energy. It recognizes that the way to amplify or expand anything that you want is to give it to others.
For many people, this idea seems counterintuitive. When you are oriented towards the physical, giving and receiving appear to be opposites. For example, if you have $100, and you give it away, you no longer have $100.
But, the principles of energy operate differently. Thus, to understand The Law of Giving and Receiving, you must think energetically about what you want. For example, if you want to experience more peace and more love, you expand your own experience by sharing a feeling of peace and love with others.
Since all things physical are based on energy, this law also applies to the material world. So, if you want to experience abundance, you have to spread abundance. By sharing wealth, you expand your own experience of it, and thus achieve more abundance in your life.
How To Use The Law
There are three simple steps you can follow in order to begin implementing this practice into your daily life. These steps are not difficult, but they do require a clear and consistent intention in order to apply them successfully.
The first step is to give constantly. Give a gift to every person you meet. This doesn’t have to be a material gift, it could be as simple as a gift of a smile, a shared positive intention, or a sense of compassion and understanding. The point is not so much about what you give them, as the energy that you hold when you do. As you set the intention to give, you spread love to everyone you encounter, creating positive karma that will return to you.
The second step is to learn how to receive. Often, as we move about our normal lives, we close ourselves off from the world. Sometimes we have a one-track mind, that can only imagine or accept manifestations in a single, specific form. Other times, we feel guilty for what we have, and do not openly accept gifts that are freely given to us. When we relax these beliefs, we open ourselves to receive a constant stream of gifts from the universe, often in ways we might not expect.
Lastly, the third step is to practice gratitude and appreciation for everything that you have. Only when you are grateful for the things you already have in your life, do you pave the way for more of what you want to come to you. Understanding this balance – feeling grateful while still desiring – will you be able to effortlessly manifest what you want.

Affirmation and Meditation on The Law of Giving and Receiving
Wherever I go, and whomever I encounter, I will bring them a gift. The gift may be a compliment, a flower, or a prayer. Today, I will give something to everyone I come into contact with, and so I will begin the process of circulating joy, wealth, and affluence in my life and in the lives of others.
Today I will gratefully receive all the gifts that life has to offer me. I will receive the gifts of nature: sunlight, the sound of birds singing, spring showers, or the first snow of winter. I will also be open to receiving from others, whether it be in the form of a material gift, money, a compliment, or a prayer.
I will make a commitment to keep wealth circulating in my life by giving and receiving life’s most precious gifts: the gifts of caring, affection, appreciation, and love. Each time I meet someone, I will silently wish them happiness, joy, and laughter.
