Best selling author, Michael Singer, author of The Untethered Soul, founder of Temple of The Universe meditation center, and even software programmer has inspired millions to dive deeper into the world of meditation.
As you may assume from this, he has covered many different aspects of meditation and the way we can work with it. Here we gathered some of our favorite mind-opening perspectives of his.
Quiet The Voice
First, one of the biggest things Michael Singer focuses on within the book The Untethered Soul is how meditation can help us get to know and most importantly quiet the voice in our heads.
The busy and talkative voice inside our head tells us thoughts that range from criticism, worry, fear, and they are all bias that clouds our perception. These thoughts are what create the necessary dualism in order to give us unmet expectations.

Beginning Meditation
Michael first worked in meditation to find quiet from the incessant mental chatter without really knowing what he was doing. He found himself focusing on mantras and using his mental will to push thoughts away.
This is where surrender came in. When he stopped actively trying to bring himself to quiet he relaxed into whatever was arising. This eventually brought his awareness to be less bothered by the thoughts and eventually no longer be distracted by them.
He was able to separate mentally listening and believing these thoughts automatically and having the awareness they are there. This is the sort of work Byron Katie teaches in order to not fall into suffering based on what thought pops in and says.
Insight From Michael Singer Into The Nature of The Mind
Just stop for a moment and see what you have given your mind to do. You said to your mind, “I want everyone to like me. I don’t want anyone to speak badly of me. I want everything I say and do to be acceptable and pleasing to everyone. I don’t want anyone to hurt me. I don’t want anything to happen that I don’t like. And I want everything to happen that I do like.” Then you said, “Now, mind, figure out how to make every one of these things a reality, even if you have to think about it day and night.” And of course your mind said, “I’m on the job. I will work on it constantly.”
The Untethered Soul
When you think about the mind as programming software. Then it will run the thoughts that bring you to the result you asked for. Most people for instance have thoughts surrounding creating the basis of safety.
This is part of the reason why when we sit to meditate and begin to quiet the mechanical mind circulating around the programming we gave it we can become aware of the root of our thoughts. This is why meditation can create clarity within the deepest emotional blockages such as addiction and even PTSD.
