Named Muladhara in Sanskrit it is also known as the root chakra or base chakra and rightfully so. This chakra is the base and our foundation to not just the seven Chakra system but to our own inner world.
How Do Chakras Become Blocked?
Chakras can be understood as energy centers that are gathered around the midline of the body and work their way up the spine. They gather around major organs and can be visualized as small vortexes of energy within the body that also radiate their energy outwards about one foot.
The chakras encompass the emotional, physical, and spiritual layers that correlate to that specific chakras purpose. Each chakra holds a different aspect of our psyche as well as has different elements and physical organs associated with it.
The chakra system works similar to a river segmented into seven sections. If one section becomes clogged it will affect the water flow within the other sections of the river. Each chakra can become blocked by suppressed emotions, fears, and holding onto what we need to let go of for our evolution.
Louise Hays, an author of many books such as Heal Your Body A-Z and You Can Heal Your Life, wrote these on the concept that our thoughts and emotions are what creates disease within the body. She goes to explain how negative emotions manifest within the body and work as a mirror to reflect back to us what is going on within our inner world.
The chakra system similarly works as a mirror into our emotions and beliefs around what the energy that chakra represents. We can look into imbalances and pain within the mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual bodies and trace it back through the chakra system to the chakra it correlates with and find ways to heal it.
Symptoms Of A Blocked Root Chakra
When the first chakra is blocked one of the main emotions that will come up is fear. This can take the form of rigidity, inability to trust, aggression, pessimism. Other symptoms include lacking self-confidence, material obsessions, a scarcity mindset, or egotistical tendencies.
Physically it can show up as an eating disorder whether over or under eating. Receiving enough nutrients is directly linked to our survival and our relationship to that is held here. It can also manifest as low energy levels, problems with elimination, lower back pain, and lower-body issues such as feet or ankle problems

What Are The Gifts of An Open Root Chakra?
With our root chakra being the first foundation of our chakra system this is also represented in what its purpose is. Our most basic needs which when we think back to prior to this day and age would be our primal desire for survival.
Adapting to our current way of life, the root chakra also encompasses feeling financially secure so that we are able to provide our essential needs. Feeling confident enough to vocalize our needs and say no to toxic or draining situations is another gift of a healthy root chakra.
Emotionally with an open root chakra, one will find it easy to trust others, able to give selflessly and feel worthy of receiving and are balanced between being dedicated as well as fluid.
More gifts of a strong and healthy root chakra include physically a strong immune system, healthy bowels, and strong bones and muscles. It includes balanced functions within the kidneys, colon, and adrenal glands.
How Can We Balance The Root Chakra?
To balance the root chakra one can practice grounding exercises such as spending time barefoot in nature or visualizing growing roots out of the Muladhara chakra and anchoring them into the earth. This is done to keep one’s awareness fully in their body and the present moment.
