We all get into bad moods sometimes — Whether it’s an argument with a friend or an annoying task assignment at work.
An irritable state of mind can be hard to shake, but we always snap out of them eventually.
But what about when eventually isn’t quick enough?
There are a lot of simple ways to help shift your mindset and ultimately change your mood.
To get you started, we’ve compiled a list of 8 approaches to help you snap out of a bad mood (fast)!
Ways To Shift Your Mood Fast
1. Get Outside
Spending some time in the great outdoors is a simple way to ease your bad mood.
In fact, an analysis of ten studies found that spending time in a green environment improved mood and self-esteem in those struggling with mental illness.
Take a few moments to lay in the grass or go for a walk.
2. Breathe
Taking a few moments to practice conscious breathing allows you to shift your focus from whatever’s bugging you, into a more positive place.
Stepping back to breathe is a great exercise to practice at any point throughout the day.
It’s incredibly simple and available for demonstration here.
3. Get Moving
Did you know that people who exercise regularly tend to experience fewer symptoms of depression and anxiety than those who don’t?
This is because exercise is a proven way to enhance people’s mood by shifting their focus and elevating their heart rate.
Next time you’re feeling worked up, try practicing yoga or going for a run.
4. Physical Touch
Physical touch has a powerful way of increasing levels of dopamine and serotonin, the neurotransmitters responsible for mood and stress regulation.
Next time you’re feeling stuck, reach out your arms to a friend or family member. You might be surprised to see just how much joy a simple hug can bring.
5. Take A Shower / Bath
I’m sure you’ve already heard of bubble baths as a form of self-care, but did you know that a 10-minute shower is a proven mental and physical mood booster?
Taking some time to dedicate to your own body and hygiene is a positive way to shift your focus.
Further, establishing routines can also help us to avoid bad-mood triggers altogether.
6. Aromatherapy
One of my personal favorite ways to shift my mood is through aromatherapy.
Scents like lavender and roman chamomile are said to be best for boosting mood, but you should certainly sniff whatever smells best to you!
After all, it is your mood we’re trying to improve here.
7. Watch Something Funny
The goal with all of these exercises is to shift your focus and remind you of the good.
Thus, watching your favorite tv show or movie is a great way to distract yourself from whatever puts you into a bad mood.
Give yourself a few hours to binge the funniest show you know.
Notice the annoyances of life fading away as you begin to smile before you know it.
8. Smile
This one might sound funny, but it’s real.
Smiling, even when forced, releasing certain hormones including dopamine and serotonin; both of which are known to increase happiness and reduce stress.
It can also help boost creativity, expand resilience, and even reverse the effects of aging.
Beating in a bad mood isn’t easy, but it’s certainly possible. And it all starts with you.
