Where Do Negative Emotions Come From? The Dalai Lama Explains

In this great video clip, His Holiness The Dalai Lama answers a simple question about negative emotions with a profound truth.

A woman asks about the origin of negativity and how you can get rid of it in your life, and the Dalai Lama responds that there are only ever two factors that lead to negativity.

The Origin of Negative Emotions

The first factor is a self-centered attitude. Our incessant focus on ‘me’ and ‘I’ means that we cannot open ourselves to see the world as it truly is. This happens both in the form of egocentrism in our daily lives (focusing only on our routines, problems, and issues, rather than practicing loving kindness and developing compassion for others), but also occurs on a more profound level from the ego body-mind itself.

According to the Dalai Lama, the second factor contributing to our negative emotions lies with the way we see the world. We tend to believe that the world around us is fixed and real, When we can accept that the true reality lies within us, we can begin to understand that the world around us is not as it appears to be. Recognizing this fact lifts the burden of negativity, and can lead to permanent, enlightened happiness.
