Manipura, the solar plexus chakra, is the third chakra in the seven chakras energy system. Chakra is Sanskrit and translates as “wheel” or “circle”. This translation can begin to explain the way the chakra system works as a continuous stream of energy circulating throughout the body. Sometimes when we become stagnant in life or it is time to change the way we have previously been living, our chakras can become blocked with this stagnation.
Characteristics Of A Balanced Solar Plexus Chakra
Manipura is located in the abdomen above the navel and up to the breast bone in the body. It includes the stomach, spleen, gallbladder, liver, and skin.
This chakra is the seat of our personal power and self-confidence. It is associated with the element of fire, bringing forth our warrior energy and self-protective qualities. This is the place where our ability to speak up for ourselves during confrontation comes from.
When this chakra is in balance, one can assert themselves without becoming aggressive. It takes the form of speaking our needs, being in touch with our boundaries, feeling confident to take up space, and self-discipline.
It is believed that this is where our ability to manifest originates from, and that we derive our motivation from this fire within our bellies. The energy of this chakra also correlates to being responsible and reliable.
It is a masculine energy center, and it is our inner support system for facing challenges while also taking purposeful action. Our self-esteem when in balance is stable and able to extend its protective qualities to others.
Traits Of An Underactive Solar Plexus Chakra
When the sacral chakra is under active someone may have severely low self-esteem, avoid confrontation, have feelings of unworthiness and resist being a focus of attention. This can also take the form of an inability to make decisions or stick to them, involving poor boundaries and a lack of motivation.
Feelings of helplessness and victimhood can arise when our inner fire is weak. One can blame their external environment for their current situation and feel a lack of self-responsibility. Flighty commitments, inconsistency within plans and a lack of reliability can stem from this imbalance as well.
Feelings of laziness, self-consciousness, and lack of motivation can present itself. Taking situations personally and allowing others to walk on them is another characteristic of blockages in the solar plexus.
Activation Allies Of The Solar Plexus Chakra
To stoke your inner fire and reignite your inner warrior you can use some of these activation allies. You can incorporate these elements into your daily habits such as listening to solar plexus empowering music while washing dishes, spending time around a campfire, lighting candles, speaking positive affirmations while working out or simply dressing in the color yellow. Some basic associated solar plexus chakra tools are presented below.
Yoga Poses To Open The Solar Plexus Chakra
More advanced solar plexus activation allies include yoga asanas or yoga poses, create their focus on the muscles surrounding the hips and cultivating flexibility. These yoga poses work to bring a sense of fluidity and inner calm when working with them. Asanas to open and activate the sacral chakra include Navasana (boat pose), Anjaneyasana with a twist (high lunge twist) and Ushtrasana (camel pose).
Affirmations To Balance The Solar Plexus Chakra
Speaking affirmations is incredibly potent when working to balance the solar plexus chakra, because we need to have a steady self-confidence within ourselves.
Self-love is incredibly important, especially when taking the time to acknowledge what you would like to change about yourself. When you speak, write or listen to affirmations actively focus on cultivating the feelings behind these words.
For example, instead of just hearing the words I am strong and capable, picture feeling all of the effects of these words in your body as well. Try out some of these affirmations to create a fire of self-love in your solar plexus:
- I accept myself unconditionally
- I am proud of myself
- I am confident in all that I do
- I act with courage and strength
- I honor my needs and boundaries
- My time is valuable
- I trust the choices I make are for my highest good
Crystals To Activate The Solar Plexus Chakra
Healing crystals can be used during meditation, placed under a pillow while sleeping, or carried in your pocket throughout your day. The color of a crystal directly correlates to which chakra this is helping you to work with. The color yellow supports the energy and balancing of the solar plexus chakra. Some specific crystals to work with are:
- Tigers eye
- Lemon quartz
- Yellow jasper
When choosing a crystal to work with it is always important to use your intuition. One way to do this is to close your eyes and hold the crystal in your hand. Let go of any expectations and allow yourself to notice any subtle sensations arising while you are holding this crystal. Take note of the state of your mind as well.
If you are not able to hold the crystal before purchasing it, another way to feel which one may be the right fit for you is by imagining you’ve decided to purchase a specific crystal. Take note of how you feel after making this decision. Again, let go of trying to force a mental response. Allow your feelings to come naturally. Witness them subjectively. You may also decide to use this practice with two different crystals in order to feel the contrast on how you would work differently with each one.
Traits Of An Overactive Solar Plexus Chakra
When the solar plexus chakra is overactive this can show up as anger, greediness, lack of compassion, workaholism, aggression and a dominating personality. When the fire in the belly is burning too strong it can take out our ability to be fluid in life and gentle with others.
One can become rigid and attached to a certain idea or plan and not be flexible to changes. Aggression and excess force come from an overactive solar plexus. An inflated ego and self-absorbed tendencies can stem from this as well.
Each one of us has both feminine and masculine energy within us. This overstimulation of the solar plexus is where our masculine energy is overpowering our feminine qualities and wisdom. To be in balance we need to welcome both our warrior and nurturing mother energy.
Techniques To Balance The Solar Plexus Chakra
An over activation of the fiery solar plexus chakra can become balanced by spending more time with the water element to calm it. By getting in touch with more nurturing feminine qualities one can welcome their intuitive wisdom back into their life.
Dancing is a great way to balance an overactive solar plexus. This is because dancing is not as goal-driven as a typical workout and this can offer us the opportunity to listen to our body’s rhythm and find some fluidity again. Stretching can also bring some balance to our inner warrior.
Meditation is another way to heal the solar plexus as this can bring patience and a sense of inner peace. Here is a way to easily start your meditation practice.
